Capsule for Berozgars

For all fellow strugglers, especially newbies, who are toiling hard day in and day out to somehow qualify in exams and cure Berozgari!

This is about books, apps, websites and other resources that may prove useful when it comes to studying as a means to hunt jobs!

THE RIGHT WEBS

Looking for credible, relevant information over internet may sometimes be tantamount to looking for a needle in a haystack. To make sure we don't end up in a similar situation, let's dig at sites where the needle may most likely be!

This is my all time favorite website for current affairs. It's for everybody out there who doesn't have hours to waste on reading newspapers in full, and yet can't ignore the news as well because of its importance in tests and exams! The website publishes one-liners, as well as details, regarding day to day affairs - both national and international.

This site is a nice spot for important information regarding Pakistan such as governments, cabinets, ministries and secretaries. One can get lists defining ministers along with their portfolios here for all territories of Pakistan

Sometimes, it's better to have background of events. This helps in memorizing the MCQs regarding the event easily. For instance the MCQs regarding various political reforms in sub-continent, like doctrine of lapse, Minto-Morley reforms, etc become easy to remember when we have insights into their background. For such information one may refer to Britannica. The explanations are easy to understand, reliable and suitably lengthy compared to those found on Wikipedia.

This website is beautiful for two reasons; it hosts both mcqs and quizzes regarding currents affairs, both national and international, pak studies, IGs, Justices, etc. Also, one can contribute by adding MCQs of their own.

The website needs not much description as it's very famous. It's suitable for all sorts of post-graduation exams and exam prep. One can get good advice and preparation material as well.

The website is famous for it's material on maths portion. It's believed that many test makers/examiners have taken material from this website in the past, sort of copying the stuff and pasting it on the test papers.

PARIKSHAWALE
The site is somewhat similar to Indiabix and contains practice material on many maths topics. Here's how the numerical section of the site looks like;

THE RIGHT APP STOCK

To turn your mobile phone into a useful learning tool, do make sure your app list includes the following:

Merriam Webster
WordWeb
Knudge.me
TuneIn Radio
Google Keep
Google Docs
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Pomodoro Timer

Merriam Webster and WordWeb both are nice reliable dictionaries that work offline. WordWeb has a sound database.
Knudge.me is good for developing vocabulary.
The importance of vocabulary cannot be exaggerated. Each one-paper test incorporates questions which have direct or indirect pertinence to vocabulary. Sections such as synonyms, antonyms, one word substitutions, analogies, reading comprehension and even grammar all require sound vocabulary. We all acknowledge the importance of being good with words-sure! But what's preventing us from being good at the word game? What's the actual issue?
I'm sure 8 out of 10 people reading this article would agree when I say "Memorization" is the issue! And it's here where Knudge.me has something to offer. Call it a a capsule for vocabulary.
Knudge makes use of the phenomenon of "association". Association is a mental connection between two concepts or events, such as a visual connection. If we associate a picture with a word; it becomes easier to memorize the word. This is because we find it easy to memorize visuals than sets of letters. All we need to do here is keep the pictures in mind, the meanings pop up on their own. Here are some illustrations!

TuneIn Radio is good especially when you want to listen to GeoNews on the go.
Google Keep is a nice note-taking app which saves your info automatically to it's cloud so that you don't lose data. Google Docs can also be used for saving files to online cloud.
Adobe Acrobat Reader is my choice for reading pdf books as I can highlight information with tools, hence saving time and resources.
Pomodoro Timer: This facilitates using Pomodoro Technique. The essence of this technique is that our productivity is greatly improved when we take breaks during study on time; compared to not taking breaks at all or taking breaks after very long periods.

THE RIGHT PRESCRIPTION

Doc, how do I deal with analytical problems?
Analytical problems look hard to crack and may act as bullies most of the time. But they are equally important. Just to quote an example, the recent test taken for the post of SI FIA (dated July 19, 2018) contained as many as ten questions of this sort.  Here's what they look like;

The administrator of a commercial designing Firm is scheduling exactly six tasks—J, K, L, M, N,
and O—for a particular week, Monday through Saturday. Each task can be completed in one full
day, and exactly one task will be 'scheduled for each day. The tasks must be scheduled according to
the following conditions:
J must be completed sometime before L is completed.
M must be completed on the day immediately before or the day
immediately after the day on which O is completed.
N must be completed on Thursday.
1. Which of the following is an acceptable schedule of tasks for the week?
Mon. Tues. Wed. Thur. Fri. Sat.
(A) J K M N O L
(B) J N L O M K
(C) K O M N L J
(D) M O J N K L
(E) O J M N L K
2. Any of the following could be completed on Saturday EXCEPT
(A)J
(B) K
(C) L
(D)M
(E) O
3. If K is completed on Wednesday, which of the following could be true?
(A) J is completed on Tuesday.
(B) L is completed on Monday.
(C) L is completed on Friday.
(D) M is completed on Monday.
(E) O is completed on Thursday.
Cheer up, there is no need to worry about the solution. All we need to do is remember a handful number of rules and some practice :) ... Here's a small booklet that will do the job...Analytical Problems
Doc, how do I deal with current affairs?
Well, nothing can substitute a thorough study of the topic in question. But if one is facing dearth of time, the following capsules will do the job:
1. Regular intake of CssTimes
2. Once a month intake of MCQs from Jahangir World Times Mag.
Doc, anything for my mathematical problems?
Yes, a once-and-for all solution is to go through 8th grade maths book and the quantitave section of GAT Book by Caravan.

This is a developing story and is supposed to be updated from time to time. Any sort of comments and suggestions will be appreciated :)

The Disappointment Panda 🐼

Disappointment Panda 🐼 If I could invent a superhero, I would invent one called Disappointment Panda. He'd wear a cheesy(low quality) eye mask and a shirt (with a giant capital T on it) that was way too small for his big Panda belly, and his super power would be to tell people harsh truths about themselves that they needed to hear but didn't want to accept. It would be awesome. And sick. And sad. And uplifting. And necessary. Afterall, the greatest truths in life are usually the most unpleasant to hear.   🐼 🐼 🐼          Disappointment Panda would be the hero that none of us would want but all of us would need. He'd the proverbial vegetables to our mental diet of junk food. He'd make our lives better despite making us feel worse. He'd make us stronger by tearing us down, brighten our future by showing us the darkness. Listening to him would be like watching a movie where the hero dies in the end: you love it even more despite making you feel horrible

Hey...Hey... La..Lalla! I believe I'm oddly obsessed with grammar...obsessed in a way that even if I die and people carry  me to the graveyard and someone in the procession happens to say something grammatically incorrect...chances are I may wake up for a while just to correct him !!!  Hatit! Hatit! Hatit!
